Niceville Garage Lock Shop deals with the locks on and around a garage. Not the opener, not the springs, not the tracks — those belong to a garage door company. We handle the cylinders, the handles, the cam locks, the side-door hardware, and the entry door between the garage and the house.
That last one is the reason this brand matters more than it sounds like it should. On most homes around Niceville and Valparaiso, the garage is the weakest point of the whole building, and the door from the garage into the house is treated as an interior door when it is really an exterior one. We spend a lot of our time explaining that, and rather more of it fixing it.

Three doors, three different problems
A garage typically has up to three ways in, and people tend to think about only one of them.
- The overhead door. The big one. On most modern installations it is not really locked at all — the opener holds it, and the hardware on the door is either absent or ornamental.
- The service door. The ordinary hinged door in the side or back wall. This is a genuine exterior door and, in our experience, it is the most neglected exterior door on the property.
- The garage-to-house door. Connects an unheated, often unobserved space to the inside of the home. Almost always fitted as though it were a bedroom door.
Each has a different failure mode and a different fix, so we will take them in turn.
The service door: the most overlooked exterior door on the property
Ask someone to describe the security of their home and they will describe the front door. The garage service door usually gets nothing, and it is frequently the softest way in: out of sight of the street, out of sight of the neighbours, often shaded, and once you are through it you are inside a closed room with a workbench, tools and a door into the house.
What we find on these doors:
- A knob or lever lock and no deadbolt. A latch alone is not a lock in any meaningful sense on an exterior door.
- A short strike screwed into trim. The strike is what a forced door actually tests, and short screws into trim board give way easily. Long screws reaching the framing behind the jamb, into a properly sized strike, are one of the cheapest genuine improvements available on any door.
- Corroded cylinders. These doors face the weather, often on a shaded wall where damp lingers, and they are used rarely enough that nobody notices the lock stiffening until it will not turn at all.
- A door that has swollen or dropped so the deadbolt no longer throws fully. A bolt that only goes halfway is a bolt engaging half a strike.
- Hinge pins exposed on an outward-opening door with no security stud or fixed pin.
- Glass in or beside the door with a thumbturn immediately inside it.
None of that is expensive to correct. A deadbolt that throws fully into a properly fixed strike, hardware suited to a salt-air environment, and hinges appropriate to which way the door swings covers almost all of it.
Locks on the overhead door itself
Older and manual overhead doors carry their own hardware, and there are two common types.
The T-handle. The T-shaped handle in the middle of the door, with a cylinder in the centre. Turning the key rotates a mechanism that pulls two long rods inwards, drawing spring-loaded bars out of slots in the tracks on each side. It is a simple, robust arrangement, and it fails in a small number of predictable ways: the cylinder seizes from weather, the set screw holding the cylinder backs out, the rods come loose or bend so the bars do not travel, or the bars themselves rust into the track slots. Because the whole mechanism lives on the outside of a door facing the driveway, everything in it takes weather all year.
The slide lock or side latch. A sliding bar on the inside of the door that drops into a track slot, sometimes with a hole for a padlock. Simple, effective when the door is manual, and genuinely dangerous if left engaged on a door with a powered opener — the opener will try to lift a bolted door and something will give, usually the door or the opener. If you have fitted an opener to a door that had a slide lock, that lock should be disabled or removed, not just left unlatched.
Cam locks turn up on smaller hardware around the garage: cabinets, tool chests, meter and equipment enclosures. They are a simple rotating flat bar and they are exactly as secure as the panel they are fitted to, which is generally not very. Useful for keeping things closed and honest people out; not a substitute for a real lock on a real door.
On a powered overhead door, the practical security question is not the lock. It is whether the emergency release — the cord that disconnects the door from the opener — can be reached from outside, and whether the opener responds to a remote that is sitting in a car parked on the driveway. Keeping the release inaccessible from outside and not leaving a remote in an unlocked vehicle addresses more real risk than any lock on the door.
The garage-to-house door is an exterior door
This is the point we would most like people to take away.
Once someone is inside the garage, they are in a private, enclosed, unobserved space with as much time as they want and, quite often, your own tools to hand. The door into the house is the only thing left. Fitted as most of them are — a hollow interior slab, a privacy knob with no deadbolt, a strike in trim — it is not much of an obstacle.
What it should have:
- A solid-core or exterior-rated slab. A hollow door is a panel, and it does not matter what lock is in it.
- A deadbolt that throws fully into a strike fixed to the framing behind the jamb with long screws.
- A self-closing arrangement. Many homes require the door between an attached garage and the house to close itself, for fire and fume reasons quite apart from security. A door propped open by a shoe is not doing either job. If yours has a closer that has been disconnected because it was inconvenient, that is worth putting right.
- No key needed to get out. A double-cylinder lock on the way back into the house is a bad idea for the same reasons it is a bad idea anywhere on an escape route.
- Hardware that tolerates the garage environment. Attached garages here run hot and humid, and a lock that would be fine indoors corrodes in one.
None of this is a large job. It is usually a slab, a deadbolt and a strike, and it converts the weakest link in the house into an ordinary secure door.
Why garage locks fail faster around here
Every lock in a garage lives in a worse environment than the same lock indoors, and around Niceville and Valparaiso the environment is a genuine factor.
An attached garage is unconditioned. It follows the outside temperature and the outside humidity, and warm damp air sitting on metal all summer does exactly what you would expect to steel springs and pins. Salt in the air, carried in on vehicles and on the breeze, makes it worse. Add the fact that a garage service door might be used twice a month, so a stiffening lock goes unnoticed for a whole season, and you get the standard call: a door that would not open on the one day someone needed it.
Vehicles contribute too. A car coming in wet raises the humidity in a closed garage considerably, and anything stored at floor level — including the bottom fixings of a service door — sits in the dampest air in the building.
The maintenance that actually helps is unglamorous: work the key in the service door lock every few weeks so it does not sit unused, use a dry lubricant rather than oil, keep the T-handle cylinder covered or at least shaded where you can, and check that the deadbolt still throws its full travel a couple of times a year. Doors move with the seasons and a bolt that went home in March may be catching by August.
Padlocking a manual door
Where a garage door is genuinely manual — no opener — a padlock through the track slot or through a hasp is a reasonable arrangement, and a great many outbuildings around here are secured exactly that way. Two conditions make it work: the padlock should be a closed or shrouded type rather than an exposed shackle, because it hangs outdoors unattended, and the hasp or bracket must be fixed into something solid, since a strong lock on a weak fixing is only ever as strong as the fixing.
The critical warning bears repeating: never leave a padlock or slide lock engaged on a door connected to a powered opener. It is a straightforward way to destroy a door.
Common questions
Almost always a weather-seized cylinder. Sometimes the whole handle turns without the door releasing, which is a different fault — a loose set screw or a disconnected rod. Both are usually repairable without replacing the handle.
